A street on the corner of East Fordham Road and Grand Concourse was co-named in honor of fallen soldier Luis A. Moreno.
Moreno, a 19-year-old Army private first class, was killed in Baghdad in 2004. He was the youngest soldier from the Bronx to die in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Moreno’s family came to the Bronx when he was just a child. Friends said he had a desire to serve and dreamed of becoming an NYPD officer after his time in the Army.
Elected officials say the co-naming was done in partnership between the city and the Dominican Veterans of America.
Council Member Pierna Sanchez says the intersection was chosen to honor Moreno because it is across the street from a military recruiting office.
