The New York Education Department announced this year's finalists for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington D.C., and the only student in the running from any of the five boroughs is from the Bronx.
Chris Brito, of Hunts Point, is one of the high schoolers in the running for a spot to represent New York in the program, and he is elated.
"I'm just in awe. Like last year, I felt like I was just this kid from the Bronx and now I feel like my name is finally being put out there. And it's just something beautiful," he says.
Chris, who attends Hyde Leadership Charter School, is a top student and a varsity baseball player. He's also involved in volunteer work around the globe, including his birth country -- the Dominican Republic.
"For us, whether he wins or not, we're all winners. We believe in him. He's our hero. He can serve as a role model for the rest of our youth," says Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
