This weekend tens of thousands of runners will hit the city streets for the TCS New York City Marathon.
One young girl from the Bronx will be one of this year’s Grand Marshals for the big race.
At 10 years old, Hope Khazraishokatkhou, has already dealt with situations that no child should have to go through and says running helps her both physically and mentally.
When Khazraishokatkhou was in fourth grade, her father left. She says she put all her emotions into running.
Around that time she got involved with the Rising New York Road Runners, a program offered in 800 schools across New York City that gets more than 260,000 students moiving.
Khazraishokatkhou did not only excel athletically, but also academically, being selected to become a youth ambassador for the group.
Around the time she started fifth grade this past September, she received an email presenting her with the chance to serve as Grand Marshal in this year’s TCS New York City Marathon.
It is only the fifth time in marathon history that there will be a grand marshal.
This year one child from each of the five boroughs will take on that title, with Khazraishokatkhou representing the Bronx.
With the honor comes the chance to hang out with Olympic medalist Jenny Simpson and rise the 26.2 miles route in the race vehicle.
“I feel like it's something I can put my mind to. Like, I might not be able to run it now, but when I'm older, if I keep working from this day on I think I will be able to run in this marathon," says Khazraishokatkhou.
