Temple Beth-El of City Island held a memorial service Monday for those killed in this weekend's synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh.
The massacre, in which 11 people were killed and others were wounded, is being called the deadliest attack on Jews in American history.
On City Island, a candle was lit for each victim and a moment of silence was observed for the wounded first responders. Rabbis stood strong in their message that people will not stop practicing their faith, even in the face of death.
Suspect Robert Bowers was shot multiple times by police before he was taken into custody. Bowers reportedly targeted HIAS, formerly known as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, in a social media post accusing the organization of bringing in invaders who "kill our people."
The group works with the federal government to help resettle refugees in the U.S. On Monday night, congregants from different religious backgrounds donated to both HIAS and the Anti-Defamation League.
