A Bronx theater house is shedding light on the dangers of elder abuse.
Monday marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a global campaign started by advocates to bring public awareness about the abuse of seniors.
At the Pregones Theater on Walton Avenue, local actors are putting on a performance about the topic in a production of "The Check."
The show deals with an aging mother and her struggles to support her adult son, who takes advantage of her financially by manipulating her emotionally and isolating her from other family members.
The 12-minute performance gets the audience involved by inviting them on stage to act out what they think should happen next.
Experts say elder abuse comes in many forms, and often involves a relative who is mentally or physically abusing their elderly loved one.
The Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention says one out of every 10 seniors living at home is the victim of abuse or neglect.
"The Check" will be performed at the Rain Senior Center at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
