A Bronx woman has written a book detailing her personal accounts of domestic violence.
Doreen Lesane's new book  'THRIVER: My Story To Tell: What Domestic Violence Taught Me and How I Learned To Live,' explores a journey through the dark and dangerous world of domestic violence and abuse into the light of life.
"I'm not ashamed of my story, what happened, happened and nothing is going to ever change that," Lesane says.
Lesane got married in 1992 and was abused by her now ex-husband for several years.
She says she was almost killed in three separate incidents.
"It was chaotic. It was horrifying. I was tired and I definitely feared for my life," she says.
The number one wrong question to ask a victim of domestic violence is "why don't you leave?" she says.
She says instead, the question should be figuring out what is preventing the person who is being abused from leaving.
Lesane says domestic violence impacts the community because it doesn't just stop inside the home where it's happening.
She says it is the community’s civic duty to take care of each other even if it means just being compassionate.
