A Bronx youth football team that keeps kids off the streets and on the field is in need of crucial funds to keep the program running.
Spring training camp is underway for the Bronx Scorpions in Pelham Bay Park. The youth football team is out on the gridiron three days a week – learning the fundamentals of the game and building character at the same time.
Scorpions head coach Rafael Pabon is working to make football accessible to all kids in the Bronx. With many parents living paycheck to paycheck, Pabon is trying to raise money to pay for kids who cannot afford to play.
He started the program for kids ages 7 to 14 three years ago. He says learning the game can teach self-discipline, teamwork and the importance of leadership on and off the field.
Pabon says fees to join the team are usually about $350 per player.
