Some residents forced from their homes by last month’s Bronx apartment building fire may soon be allowed back into their apartments.
The city's Department of Buildings says it recently gained access to the property at 34-33 DeKalb Avenue and is recommending that the vacate order be lifted for some units.
Tenants who need to retrieve belongings are being advised to contact their landlord. Officials say the building owner is actively working to address the remaining safety concerns.
As previously reported, the four-alarm fire happened in Norwood on Aug. 20.
The American Red Cross previously stated that 159 people - 130 adults and 29 children as well as 35 pets from 60 households - registered for emergency assistance.
Firefighters also faced challenges battling the blaze because two vehicles were blocking nearby fire hydrants.
More than 200 FDNY and EMS personnel responded to the scene. Two firefighters and two civilians suffered minor injuries.
