The Bronx Zoo has broken the Guinness World Record for the largest display of origami elephants in an effort to help stamp out global elephant poaching.
The record was broken with 78,560 paper elephants, beating the previous record of 33,000.
John Calvelli, a member of the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo, says an estimated 96 elephants are killed in Africa on a daily basis.
More than 40 countries around the world and all 50 states helped provide the zoo with the multicolored parade of pachyderms. The origami display is not open to the public, but the zoo will incorporate the elephants into its holiday display.
An estimated 35,000 African elephants are killed each year for their tusks.
