During the final winter months, residents at one Brooklyn apartment building say National Grid turned off their heat to fix a gas leak. However, the heat been off for a week and a half, with no end in sight.
“Before I got a space heater, I couldn't work here. It was a very cold day. I work out of my apartment, so I lost a day of work," says resident David Walance.
Walance has been relying on his microwave for meals, hot showers and tea.
On Feb. 18, he says the gas in his apartment building on Gold Street was shut off due to a gas leak. Walance claims National Grid claims it can’t turn on the individual gas meters because of outdated pipes.
Due to this, most residents have been using space heaters, which is raising concern as that’s what caused the deadly fire at Twin Parks in the Bronx back in January.
Building management has posted letters and violations in the lobby stating they “hope” National Grid will come this weekend and turn on the heat.
The biggest concern Walance has is that if pipes have to be replaced, that could take months.
