Nearly nine years after losing her son to gun violence, a Brooklyn mother is once again transforming her grief into action.

Tuesday marks the start of Disrupting the Hate Week, a community-driven initiative dedicated to healing, unity and supporting families impacted by gun violence.

The day also marks what would have been Melquain Anderson's birthday. An artist and student, he was killed in 2017 at a bus stop.

Since then, his mother, Michelle Barnes-Anderson, has become a powerful advocate for victims' families, launching initiatives aimed at keeping her son's legacy alive while helping others cope with loss.

As part of Disrupting the Hate Week, she is encouraging local artists and community members to share artwork and messages promoting peace, healing and unity on social media using the hashtag #DisruptingTheHateWeek.

The week honors Anderson's life and creative spirit while shining a light on the lasting impact of gun violence on families and communities.

Over the years, Anderson's mother has led numerous efforts in his memory, from advocating for criminal justice reform to supporting mothers grieving the loss of a child and pushing for broader awareness about the ripple effects of gun violence.
