Wednesday marks the start of the Lunar New Year, and for many people in the Asian community, it's one of their most important holidays. Steve Mei, director of the Chinese-American Planning Council in Sunset Park, said they are ready to celebrate. "It's really a time for reflection, renewal and family," said Mei. "I think it's like a new beginning and brings in prosperity for health and wealth, which is very important." Each year represents a zodiac sign within the lunar calendar. 2025 marks the year of the snake. "The snake is supposed to symbolize some grace, intuition, wisdom," said Mei. With so many people in the Asian community calling Brooklyn home, they said they're happy to have places where they can celebrate the new year together. "We are meeting our friends. It's like a big family," said Alan Tang, a member of Homecrest Community Services, which provides multi-social services for immigrant families in southern Brooklyn. He says he can't wait to celebrate the Lunar New Year. "Everybody wants to be better in the new year and wish everyone good health and good luck," he says. Celebrations for the Lunar New Year will continue throughout the month of February.
