Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at his briefing Wednesday that the Buffalo Bills and the state have struck an agreement to allow fans to attend their first playoff game since 1996.
The state Department of Health agreed to allow about 6,700 fans in the stadium. Groups will be socially distanced and everyone must wear masks. Fans are also required to get tested for COVID-19 before the game.
"BioReference [Laboratories] will be conducting tests in the two days prior to the event for 13 hours each day in the parking lot, drive-thru testing," said Robert Mujica, the state’s budget director.
According to the governor, those who attend the game will be contact traced to see if there was any spread of the virus. If all goes well, he says this rapid testing model could help open other businesses around the state.
"We can't take six months, nine months, 12 months of a closed down economy," he said.
State officials also reminded New Yorkers to celebrate New Year’s safely.
