A Williamsbridge homeowner is accused of killing a man who allegedly tried to break into his home Thursday night.
News 12 is told officers responded to a call for a robbery just before midnight along East 223rd Street and Barnes Avenue. When they arrived, they found a 29-year-old man unresponsive in the street with trauma to the head. He was rushed to the hospital where was pronounced dead shortly after.
The homeowner, 54-year-old Troy George, has since been charged with murder.
Neighbors say they saw George chase the man up the street towards Bronxwood Avenue with a metal object.
"When he left, the pipe was long. When we came back and the police got the pipe, the pipe was bent. So whatever he did to him down the street, must have been one hell of a whopping because the pipe was not straight anymore. It was bent," said neighbor Priscilla Ford.
Some say he went too far, others say he was protecting his wife and property.
"He's always said 'hello' to me and he's been a kind neighbor, he's been a good neighbor. I've been here for six years and he's been nothing but kind to me," said Ford.
The homeowner told police he was trying to get inside his home, and that he confronted the man when he realized what was happening. He then allegedly hit the man in the head with a metal pipe and called 911.
Officers have yet to release the name of the man who died.
