The state comptroller's office reports that it has hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed funds belonging to Bronx residents.
The office routinely holds forgotten or unclaimed money, says state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. Some of it dates back to 1940.
Officials say they are trying to return the cash to its rightful owners.
As much as $245 million from over 82,000 separate accounts is currently attributed to Bronx residents, DiNapoli says.
The state comptroller's website has a form where residents can enter their first and last names to check if there is any unclaimed money held on their behalf.
