Brandon Hendricks-Ellison would have just finished his freshman year of college and should’ve been enjoying his last days as an 18-year-old. Instead, his mother is preparing for the one-year anniversary of his death.
Hendricks-Ellison was struck by a stray bullet and killed while at a barbecue with friends just days after graduating high school last year. Nahjim Luke was indicted on second-degree murder charges in his death.
Ten students will be awarded $5,000 from the Brandon Hendricks Scholarship Fund on July 7, his birthday.
A candlelight vigil will be held Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of his death. The vigil will be at 6 p.m. on the courts of East 156th Street between Park and Courtlandt Avenues.
The block of East 156th Street will be co-named “Brandon Hendricks Ellison Boulevard.”
