The newly renovated playground at the Bronx River Houses in Soundview has been renamed after a hero who died saving others on 9/11.
Friends, family and community leaders gathered to honor the legacy of Capt. William Harry Thompson. He served for 27 years as a court officer before falling in the line of duty.
Borough President Vanessa Gibson said renaming the park in honor of Thompson solidifies his life, recognizes his legacy and will give kids a chance to learn his name and his story.
His son, Michael, says renaming the playground was the most fitting way to honor his father.
"Physical fitness was something that was very, very important to my father,” he said. “Fellowship, a sense of community – that was also very important to him and to know that we can unpack all of that right here, where his spirit will forever be living."
