A car plummeted into the Bronx River Wednesday, police say.
The incident happened off the Sheridan Expressway near the Cross Bronx Expressway, I-95 southbound exit around 3 a.m.
Officials temporarily closed the area near East 177th Street, but reopened the road shortly after the incident.
Traffic was backed up near the site of the incident and residual delays continued to linger throughout the morning.
Police say they believe the driver may have been intoxicated when he lost control of the car and crashed into the river.
The driver was able to get out of the vehicle and swim to safety.
He was not injured during the incident.
Police did not say if the driver was facing any charges.
