Community members took part in a caravan rally Wednesday to call on the FDNY to shut down the North Brooklyn Pipeline--by denying permits to National Grid.
Demonstrators said that the FDNY has the power to deny permits needed by National Grid to move forward with the pipeline project.
National Grid needs approval from the FDNY for more than 10 permits to move forward with the liquified natural gas expansion, according to the demonstrators.
Demonstrators also signed and delivered a large letter to FDNY staff calling for those permits to be denied.
They say the goal is to stop National Grid from expanding its fracked gas storage facility in Greenpoint.
Demonstrators are also pushing for the FDNY to issue a positive declaration under the City Environmental Quality Review, in hopes that an environmental impact study of the project can be conducted.
The rally started at Brooklyn Borough Hall and ended at the FDNY headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn.
A rep with FDNY responded to the rally saying the fire department has no role approving the construction of natural gas pipelines, or otherwise regulating the natural gas supply.
Adding that the fire department reviews and considers all applications and permits in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
National Grid says the pipeline and energy projects are not related. They also say work on the Greenpoint Energy Center project is critical to keeping millions of customers warm throughout the winter.
