A celebration of life was held Saturday to pay tribute to a man who was. known for his music, art and energetic personality all the way from St. Lucia to Brooklyn.
Baba Inde died house fire in December. His children say he was a 71-year-old man who lived like he was 41. Instead of mourning his life and hosting a funeral, they say he'd have wanted the people whose lives he touched to celebrate his memory.
Many of those people gathered next his his memorial Saturday on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street. Inde sold handmade jewelry for about seven years, and set up shop along Court Street next to Trader Joe's at the suggestion of his son, who worked there.
Standing alongside a ton of foot traffic with room for lots of human connection, he and his work quickly became a neighborhood staple.
After he tragically passed in a house on Dec. 19, this memorial popped up where his jewelry stand once was.
Those who knew the St. Lucian native knew he had a passion for music. He'd travel internationally as a musician with the band. Tru Tones, later forming his own group, Wassin.
Known for striking up a conversation with almost anyone, he'd often greet people with the phrase, "Love is my religion."
Inde leaves behind a daughter, three sons and seven grandchildren.
