With Juneteenth National Independence Day on Monday, New York City will have plenty of celebrations going on to kick off the weekend.
Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the emancipation proclamation was brought to enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it.
The city will have events at Grand Army Plaza, Apollo Theatre, Van Cortland Park and several other locations.
Gov. Hochul announced that Sunday and Monday the black liberation flag will be flown over our state capital to signify New Yorkers solidarity with the black community, families, and individuals.
One World Trade Center and Kosciuszko Bridge also all will be lit up red, black and green as part of the festivities.
