The rain didn't stop music and dance from filling the streets of West Farms as people turned out for the Central American Day Parade Sunday.

The annual event along Southern Boulevard celebrated the independence of several countries in Central America from Spain.

Parade President Evelyn Arauz tells News 12 The Bronx that this year marks the 22nd anniversary of the parade. She says the parade invites people to come and march, enjoy various cultural groups, arts and crafts, music and dance.

"Independence is a good thing,” says parade attendee Wellington Ramos. “Prior to independence, a lot of countries were colonized by the Europeans, and during colonization, all their nationality was taken away from them. So when independence came, they felt really liberated."

Attendees tell News 12 that the parade is a great way for them to remember their roots.

“It makes me feel proud to participate in something that my family has in them and it makes me have joy in myself for it,” says Guevara Neeresy.
