Eight churches from around the Bronx came together Saturday for a soccer tournament, and it came amid all the excitement of the World Cup.
It marks the fifth annual Community Youth Development Council Soccer Tournament at Soundview Park.
"It's all about evangelizing and spreading the word of God,” said one organizer. “Letting people know about Jesus Christ while having fun."
Every year, churches come together for friendly competition and fellowship to play their favorite sport. The tournament started early in the morning and participants will continue playing against each other until a winner takes the final game.
Although people are watching the World Cup all over the world, participants say this is like their own World Cup right at home.
Organizers say the games are about fellowship and fun and are open to all churches of all faiths.
