The city has announced an $88 million investment to remove lead from all public housing buildings.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city will be using new technology to identify NYCHA apartments that contain lead.
The X-ray device will allow inspectors to see under several layers of paint to confirm whether lead is present.
All 135,000 NYCHA apartments throughout the city will be inspected using the new technology, with 5,000-7,000 units being screened each month.
City leaders say once lead is detected, immediate action will be taken to safely remove the threat from the apartment. They are calling this new approach revolutionary.
"We don't want to see any child suffer or any families," says de Blasio. "We want to take this issue like some diseases of the past that were eradicated. We want to take the challenge of lead exposure and eradicate it once and for all for all."
The city says its goal is to have all NYCHA apartments inspected for lead by the end of next year.
