City officials have announced a $60 million animal shelter that's slated for the Bronx.
The 47,000-square-foot facility in Co-op City is part of an effort to provide full-service animal shelters across the five boroughs.
Animal Care Centers of NYC, a nonprofit contracted by the city to handle stray animals, is leading the nation in the placement of dogs and cats. The shelters take in more than 30,000 animals a year and placed 94.3 percent of all dogs and cats in 2017 into homes.
The new City Island shelter will have space for 70 dogs, 140 cats, 30 rabbits and 20 animals of other species.
The ASPCA commented on the announcement, saying in part: "This new shelter will be a critical lifesaving resource for pets and their owners in the Bronx. For too long, vulnerable Bronx animals have been transported to shelters in neighboring boroughs."
The shelter is set to open in 2024, but must first go through a community approval process.
Animal Care Centers of NYC is an open-admissions organization, which means it never turns away homeless, abandoned, injured or sick animals.
