The city announced a slew of new measures Monday to fight against the epidemic of opioid addiction, including a new NYPD task force and a push to make treatment accessible.

The HealingNYC plan comes as officials report 1,100 opioid-related deaths in New York last year. Deaths were reported in all five boroughs, but the Bronx and Staten Island were hit the hardest.

Officials are blaming the synthetic opioid fentanyl for half of the city's overdoses during the second half of the year. Fentanyl is similar to morphine but much more potent, according to experts.

Part of HealingNYC includes distributing 100,000 doses of naloxone, a drug that reverses the effects of an overdose. Another part includes increased outreach to young people. And a new team of 84 NYPD officers will now investigate all reported overdoses, fatal and nonfatal, officials say.
