Construction crews have begun dismantling walls surrounding the Jerome Park reservoir located at the corner of West 205th St. and Goulden Avenue.
The white walls were installed as a protective barrier from construction work that included the use of dynamite, but local residents have called them an eyesore for years.
Access to the reservoir is restricted.
In October, the Department of Environmental Protection allowed students inside the property to study the reservoir but said it would not allow broader public access to the site.
Residents say they will continue to press for access, but community activist Gary Axelbank says people living near the park will be pleased to see the wall go.
"We'll get to see something a little nicer," Axelbank says.
The removal could be completed as early as next week, according to workers.
