The city moved again this week to clean up a notorious drug den in the South Bronx.
The Hole, as it's called, is a secluded spot that serves as a popular place for addicts to inject drugs near St. Ann's Avenue. The city performed a prior cleanup in 2015, after Mayor Bill de Blasio visited the site personally. But opioid abuse remains prevalent in the area.
"It's always been kind of an underground shooting gallery," says Adrian Feliciano, a worker with the group Boom!Health. "It's within a stone's throw away from schools."
Boom!Health says the Hole has been a problem spot for years. The group provides addicts there with safe injection supplies and educational tools to help them battle addiction.
The Daily News has reported that it is the site of the highest rate of heroin-involved overdoses in the city.
Police sealed up a breached fence Tuesday, and the Department of Sanitation cleaned up nearly 4,000 discarded needles from inside, workers say.
Addiction treatment advocates are pushing for a new safe injection facility, arguing that it would be sanitary, provide treatment materials and have a nurse on-hand.
