Young women from the Urban Sports Group's City Divas
softball team took on the newly formed NYPD women's softball team for a game
Wednesday.
Derrick Brown is the executive director the City Divas
program. He says, "We want our girls to see other strong talented creative
determined women, to be their mentors."
Officer Kaminie Jeeuth says playing for the City Divas
helped her stay on the right track.
"It kept me out of the street away from harm, and it
provided a safe haven for me to grow up," Jeeuth says.
Jeeuth now plays on the NYPD team. She says it's important
for the City Divas to get to play with the NYPD.
"They get to see a different side of NYPD, we're not
always out there in the hustle, we're human beings just like everyone
else," Jeeuth says.
NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison shared a personal
moment with both teams at the game before he threw out the first pitch.
"The last thing when I was your age that I wanted to do
was become a cop...it was something like this, a cops and kids basketball game,
that opened my eyes," he said.
The City Divas say they were inspired by the officers.
"Especially these women in the NYPD, it's inspiring.
You have these women in these high positions, and positions that they
especially weren't given earlier in times," says Lianna, of the City Divas
team. "We're playing sports, something that women weren't really looked at
to go and play. It's really empowering."
