City Island to join Department of Transportation 'Regional Slow Zones'
The rollout followed the passage of Sammy's Law that grants the city the authority to lower speed limits.
In an effort to improve traffic safety and make city streets safer, the Department of Transportation announced a reduction of speed limits in select city locations.
City Island is listed as one of the new "Regional Slow Zones."
By the summer, the entirety of the island will be reduced to a 20 mph speed limit.
"Twenty miles per hour is a crawl," said Mary, a longtime City Island resident, "but there really is a speeding problem!"
The rollout followed the passage of Sammy's Law that grants the city the authority to lower speed limits.
John Doyle, City Island Rising board member, said the plan is necessary to keep the community safe, as long as it's executed properly.
"If it's enforced it will be a very good thing because it will clamp down on the speeding... which is one of the most common complaints we all get here," said Doyle.
The DOT announced alarming statistics for the neighborhood, stating five severe traffic injuries occurred over the past five years.
By the end of the year, the city said 250 locations citywide will have lower speed limits.
"If it leads to one person's life being saved, it's worth it," said Doyle.
