The city’s Charter Revision Commission [CRC] is looking to do just that - revise the charter - which leaders call the “city’s constitution.”
The CRC is asking New Yorkers for input on ways to improve it, particularly when it comes to housing.
The commission held one of five citywide public meetings on Tuesday night at Fordham University.
Leaders said they’re considering changes to the charter, with the hope of delivering solutions to create fair housing opportunities and build more units.
HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrion Jr. spoke exclusively to News 12, saying the city faces a major supply issue and a 1.4% vacancy rate, making it difficult for families to find housing.
“We need to increase the supply, and for that we need to change the rules of the game and make sure that we can build more housing everywhere in New York City,” said Carrion.
“We’re charged with looking at the entire charter, but one of the things that we’re really committed to focusing on is affordable housing and the ways in which the city charter might be revised to make it easier to create more housing for more New Yorkers,” said Richard Buery, chairman of the CRC.
The CRC is hosting two more public meetings next month, one in Manhattan and one in Staten Island.
