New Yorkers across the city faced a hot, humid Thursday, with temperatures touching the 90s.
City officials opened air conditioned cooling centers to help residents, especially senior citizens, deal with the summer scorcher.
One such center in Soundview saw people coming and going throughout the day. As people cooled off inside, they played bingo. The city Office of Emergency Management is urging New Yorkers to stay inside, keep cool and drink lots of water. Officials also say residents should check on their neighbors.
To find the nearest cooling center, residents can call 311.
Elsewhere, children played in pools and sprinklers outdoors. Many hopped in the John Mullaly Park pool before it closed at 7.
Scattered showers are expected to move in Friday with a chance of thunderstorms, according to forecasts. The rain will also bring cooler temperatures, with highs only in the 70s.
