A unanimous vote pushed forward a proposed animal shelter in Co-op City.
The proposed location on Bartow Avenue was given the green light by the Land Use Committee. The shelter was voted down by Community Board 10 back in June.
Councilman Andy King originally stood against the shelter, but has now changed his tune and pushed for a compromise. He says a number of community benefits agreements are being offered at the location as well.
This includes youth programming at Truman High School, Co-op City traffic and street improvements, the conversion of 2075 Bartow Ave. into a youth center and a senior breakfast program.
But King also recognized the ugliness of the process to get to this point.
"These conversations were not as cordial as they should have been, not as respectful as they should have been," says King.
Some residents say they would have liked to see something different at the location, like housing, but animal rights advocates are pleased.
The entire City Council will vote on the legislation Nov. 14.
