Community members and activists are pushing for more LGTB resources in the Bronx.

Currently, the Bronx is the only borough in New York City without an LGBT center open to everyone.

Jose Collzao, site manager behind the first and largest gay senior center in the Bronx, says he serves about 40 people a day. He says the center offers health screenings, computer labs and free meals.

"Many of them have seen the ugliest of faces of homophobia back in the ‘50s and ‘60s," he says. "It's always been an honor to work with these participants who went through stone wall."

City Councilman Ritchie Torres says the center is not enough. He says he has secured $20 million to convert the old Fordham Library, part of which will be home to the Bronx's first LGBT center.

"My goal is to create a central safe space that serves as a sanctuary for LGBT people who might be in the closet and who are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality," he says.

Torres is the first openly gay city councilman from the Bronx. He says the opening of the first LGBT center for all ages should be within the next three years.
