A Bronx community board voted Monday against a city proposal to build a full-service animal shelter in Co-op City.

The city's Department of Health submitted a uniform land-use review application for the proposed space at 2050 Bartow Ave. The proposal was met with backlash.

The city says the shelter would have room for 70 dogs and 140 cats and create jobs. But residents say the piece of land had already been slated for a youth center in the past and would increase traffic.

The city says they chose the site for its close proximity to public transportation and for available parking nearby.

The Bronx and Queens are the only two boroughs without full-service animal shelters and will soon be required to have them.
