The NYPD says a 16-year-old was shot and killed outside the Whitman Houses on Saturday night.

The victim's great-grandparent exclusively told News 12 'Tae' was a rising basketball player, and his future was cut short.

“It is a sad commentary of what took place with him at such an early age," said Terrence Copeland.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) tells News 12 it has invested over $900,000 in CCTV equipment at the Whitman Houses since 2013.

Residents say they have raised concerns about the effectiveness of this surveillance.

At the site of the shooting, 32 Auburn Place, four security cameras are visible, with one obscured by tree coverage.

A NYCHA spokesperson tells News 12 there are 149 security cameras throughout the Whitman Houses, and staff check these cameras daily following incidents.

Local community groups are actively working to create a safer environment in Brooklyn as they continue to address the urgent needs brought to light by this tragedy.
