Community members and leaders held a vigil Saturday in East Harlem mourning the death of Omar Edwards, the off-duty NYPD officer shot and killed Thursday night.

Community members are upset about the shooting, calling the incident "crazy."

"You can shoot somebody in the leg, maybe the arm. This has to stop," says Swan Moore, who lives in Harlem.

Local leaders say they don't believe the police department can handle the case, calling for an independent investigation.

"We have no confidence in the ability and willingness of the NYPD to conduct an investigation," says Noel Leader, a member of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement. "Especially where there may be some wrongdoing on the part of its members."Police are watching footage from police cameras in the area to see how the shooting transpired.
