November is National Diabetes Month, and one Brooklyn organization is offering culturally inclusive education for those with diabetes to help them manage it in their lifestyle.

Studies show that Black and Hispanic Americans are disproportionately impacted by the disease. Brooklyn has a 12% rate of diabetes and 24% rate of obesity, according to the community organization CAMBA.

The program helps participants receive about 10 hours of one-on-one nutrition education around their specific diabetes diagnosis, exercise and mental health. Since the program started two years ago, they’ve helped 265 Brooklyn residents learn more about how they can live around their diabetes.

The program is funded by a grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and a matching grant from NewYork-Presbyterian.

The program is free and open to anyone with type-2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, or gestational diabetes, regardless of legal status or insurance.
