Friday marks the two-year anniversary of Jamel Floyd’s death. Floyd died while in the Metropolitan Detention Center, and the community held a protest and vigil in his honor as they continue to demand justice.
Floyd was 35 years old at the time of his death and was set to be up for parole. His family previously told News 12 they were waiting for him to return home so he could walk his mother down the aisle.
After Floyd’s death, the detention center released a statement saying he was being disruptive, barricading himself inside his cell and breaking the cell door with a metal object. The Federal Bureau of Prisons released a statement that said the following:
“BOP is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates in our population, our staff, and the public.  The BOP takes seriously our duty to protect the individuals entrusted in our custody as well as maintain the safety of correctional staff and the community.”
Many community members are also calling for inmates to be freed, saying that Metropolitan Detention Center is unsafe.
