Community members took a preemptive strike against a proposed shelter across from a Norwood school by holding a protest Tuesday.

The community is taking action against what members believe will become an all-men's shelter inside a Sam's Floor Covering location. Their worries surfaced after an application was filed with the Department of Buildings requesting to expand the building and add sleeping accommodations.

Community Board 7 members say the application was approved by the DOB in March and that they are against an all-men's shelter so close to P.S./M.S. 20, which directly faces the Sam's Floor Covering building. The board's chairwoman says they don't oppose a shelter; they're just worried about it being exclusively for men.

"We have no clue what's going to happen here, and that's what we are worried about," says Adeline Walker-Santiago.

The community board proposed an alternate location for the shelter at the FEGS Bronx Mental Health Center on Jerome Avenue.

News 12 has not confirmed whether the Sam's Floor Covering location will in fact be a men's shelter; there's just the application for expansion. The Department of Homeless Services has told the community that it has not made any final decisions.
