Melrose Pharmacy has been serving the community for over 50 years, but soon it'll be closing its doors.

Community members rallied together Thursday to try and save it.

They say the area of the South Bronx has been hit hard by the pandemic and that it doesn’t make sense to take their services away.

The pharmacy located at 666 Courtlandt Ave. is owned by Walgreens and has been a staple in the community for over half a century.

The community is calling on Walgreens to reconsider its decision. According to Walgreens, the pharmacy is set to close on Nov. 18, and prescriptions will automatically be transferred to a nearby Walgreens at 155th Street and Third Avenue.

"It is unconscionable and irresponsible for Walgreens to start consolidating pharmacies when we most need them,” said Councilmember Rafael Salamanca Jr.

Celinez Bosque, who says she’s grown up with the pharmacy, started a petition to save it. She says she has submitted the petition to Walgreens.

Walgreens told News 12 in a statement that closing the pharmacy is a business decision and that it wasn’t easy. It also said customers won’t need to do anything and that their prescriptions will be transferred automatically.
