The New York Restoration Project along with City Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr. and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced the allocation of $2 million for the new Haven Project Friday.
The plan will create one of the first publicly accessible waterfront sites in the Bronx right on East 132nd Street in Port Morris.
"The neighborhood came together in a collaborative community planning process to transform Mott Haven and Port Morris," said Michael Johnson, of South Bronx Unite.
The plan will also work to improve the health and well-being of residents in the surrounding area with a green space for walking and exercising.
"High rates of obesity, high rates of asthma, high rates of diabetes, and all these negatives are actually connected to lack of recreational space," Johnson said.
