A community summit was held today at the Metropolitan College of New York to discuss how residents of the Bronx can take action against the opioid crisis that's sweeping the nation.
Some of the topics discussed include the stigma associated with addiction and ways to implement services for those who are addicted to drugs into the community.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that every day, more than 115 people die from opioid abuse in the U.S.
In 2016, the Bronx had the highest rate of overdose deaths in New York City.
New services like all hours access centers and on-site treatment programs are being brought to the Bronx in hopes these rates change.
The Acacia Network, who hosted the summit along with the Third Avenue Bid, said it all starts with education.
"Our drug dealers in this country have become our doctors," said CEO of Acacia Network Raul Russi. "And until we face that... we're not going to stop this addiction."
