A proposed homeless shelter in Norwood prompted some pushback from community members, but instead of opposing it outright, they say they've come up with an alternative.

The original permits would have placed the shelter for men across from P.S./M.S. 20 on Webster Avenue. It will open at 3600 Jerome Ave. instead, after opposition from Community Board 7 and Councilman Andrew Cohen.

In an op-ed for the Norwood News, Cohen and Steven Banks, the commissioner of the city Department of Social Services, praised the community, writing that "rather than saying not in my backyard, they did their homework, they advocated, and they achieved consensus, bringing a property owner and a not-for-profit service provider to the table while gathering the support of community board members and neighbors alike."

The two-story shelter will house around 200 men from the Bronx. It's expected to open this summer, officials say.
