Kids love playing video games, but they now have the chance to create them in their computer science class.
The Department of Education Deputy Chancellor Phil Weinberg paid a visit to In-Tech Academy in the Bronx where students were kicking off New York City's Computer Science Education Week.
New this year is also the first-ever New York City "Hack league," a citywide coding competition also beginning today.
While the curriculum at In-Tech Academy focuses on STEM subjects, the mayor's 10-year plan for computer science in schools will introduce all students from elementary to high school to things like robotics and the basics of computer coding.
As technology continues to transform all sectors of our economy, those at the event today say students will need STEM skills to succeed.
Those behind the city's STEM push in schools say growth will only increase students with knowledge and make them better equipped to enter the workforce.
