Residents at an apartment building in Concourse Village say they are fed up with elevator issues and fear for their safety.
Ahmell Thomas says he experienced a near tragedy last weekend. He says he started to get into the elevator when he realized his foot didn't hit the ground. He looked down and saw only an open elevator shaft below him.
Another resident had to be rescued by the fire department before Thomas' incident.
Residents say they do not feel safe taking the elevator again if it is working. They say it has been an issue for years.
Two residents have started a petition demanding a new elevator. They say they plan to hold their August rent until the elevator is fixed.
The building was issued a summons and cease use order Tuesday for a non-working elevator and broken door.
The Department of Buildings said during the inspection, the elevator was stuck between the fourth and fifth floors.
News 12 reached out to the building's management company who said they did not have time to talk.
