Council Member Restler proposes higher fines for alternate side parking violations

Council Member Lincoln Restler has introduced legislation to increase the fines over a 12-month period.
If the legislation passes, the first violation would cost $65, the second and third would cost $100 and a fourth in a year would send your vehicle to a tow shop.
Restler says these penalties are needed because streets are not getting cleaned.
"Our streets are not getting cleaned, and it's because it's cheaper for New Yorkers to pay for occasional alternate side parking tickets than it is to park their cars in a garage," says Restler.
Alternate side parking was introduced in the 1950s. It recently returned to occurring twice a week in many neighborhoods after being scaled back to once a week during the pandemic.
