Neighbors are calling on police to step up as reports of car thefts and break-ins in Country Club are increasing.
Residents say this is a decades-long issue of people breaking into cars parked on the street, but now the situation is only getting worse.
They say some thieves have been so bold recently that they walk right into someone's driveway to check to see if the car doors are unlocked.
In one instance, a person rummaged through a car that was parked all the way in a resident’s backyard and found the car keys that were left inside.
A video caught another case where a man trespassed into someone's backyard to check if the shed was unlocked.
Both incidents happened last month.
NYPD data shows that so far this year in the 45th Precinct, there have been 98 reported incidents of grand larceny auto. The same time last year, there were 63 reported incidents.
George Havranek, president of the Spencer Estate Civic Association, says, "Despite the best efforts of the neighborhood and the community to get more to police presence, due to budget restraints, that is not going to happen in the near future."
For Gina and Felton Staton, their car was locked and someone still managed to break into it and steal it, despite not having the key.
Gina Staton says, "We all work really hard. We pay a lot of money to live here, stay here. It's always been a quiet, safe residential neighborhood, and we expect it to stay that way."
Police say that no one in that incident has been arrested and it is still under investigation.
