Starting Monday, students at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn can walk down the hallway and get their COVID-19 shot. This vaccine site is just one of several the Department of Education is opening at Summer Rising sites across the city.
News 12 has seen and spoken to several students who walked right into school Monday and decided to get their shot. This is all a part of the push to get younger people vaccinated - specifically ages 12 to 15.
Vaccines started rolling out at 9 a.m., and people will have until 6 p.m. to get their shot on July 26 and 27. For those in the Bronx, this initiative starts July 27 and 28 over at the Herbert H. Lehman High School.
The DOE says vaccines will be available at 25 Summer Rising sites between now and August 13.
Veronika Anastasiadis is senior and cheerleader at Fort Hamilton High School, and says she found out about the vaccine before cheer practice and decided to get it.
"I was coming in for cheer and heard about it when I came inside. It's very exciting. I want to be able to go back to normal and live a life where I am not scared of getting sick," she says.
All minors must have verbal consent from a parent either over the phone or in person. Schools chancellor Miesha Ross Porter says the goal is to get all students 12 and older their first dose by August 9 that way they are fully vaccinated by the start of the school year.
