Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that some businesses including restaurants, bars and gyms must close by 10 p.m. starting Friday statewide.
The governor has also outlined new restrictions for gatherings at private homes.
Restaurants will still be allowed to provide curbside pickup or delivery for food, but not alcohol.
This comes as new measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in cluster areas - but the restrictions will be implemented statewide.
Gov. Cuomo says coronavirus numbers are creeping up not only across New York but also in surrounding states, which is why he says the state needs to back off of economic activity to nip those positivity rates before they get out of control.
“I believe we use more science than any state in the nation as primarily the testing data. The reason we have been successful in reducing the spread in New York is, we've been stepping ahead of COVID. You know where it's going, stop it before it gets there,” said Gov. Cuomo.
A spokesperson from the New York State Restaurant Association tells News 12 in a statement, “Today’s news is a huge blow to the restaurant industry that is desperately trying to stay afloat. Our members have put in place procedures and protocols to mitigate the spread, and we’ll continue to do so to ensure the safety of our employees and patrons. We understand the logic behind micro-cluster restrictions, but at this time we have concerns about blanket statewide restrictions like this."
